The media and our culture does put a lot of pressure on girls, but I don't think it's a case for burning your fashion mags; It's more along the lines of *not* trying to be what we see...

I was just about to rant about the current state of popular media, and the unhealthy expectations it imposes on young girls, and then I realized: I--like many women--had the same body-image issues growing up, when the standard for beauty was slightly different. I guess it has something to do with being female, or an American female, at least. I don't know.

I hear from other people with young girls, that their daughters are self-aware of the size of their thighs, the waist, etc. at an early age. It just breaks my heart. I guess in some respects it is normal, but this image-obsessed culture we live in is like throwing gasoline on a fire.

I don't suppose I'm telling you anything you don't already know--I just had to rant anyway. And I think I'm going to burn my fashion magazines. How's that?
