ASMW – Les Savy Fav

This week’s entry is for a band known as Les Savy Fav. This New York band got its start at university in Rhode Island and has an interesting way with both instrumentation and lyrics that keeps me coming back to their tracks. Checking out their discography, I’ve noticed that they always seem to be looking to add more to their sound, but at the same time, never lose themselves. The current album, “Let’s Stay Friends,” has a few tracks with guest vocalists, specifically “Kiss Kiss is Getting Old” and “Comes and Goes”. The lyrics are well-rooted in academia and sometimes are twitch-muttered in syncopation and on other tracks are shout-blasted over grunge-fuzz and high-distortion guitar licks. I hope these guys come to Atlanta for a live show someday soon.
The track I’ve highlighted here, “Rage in the Plague Age” went all too well with my recent addiction to the Knighthood game on FaceBook, which I blame entirely on Tsani and Kimberly, and even includes a temporally-shifted call to rock-n’-roll arms:

Draw up the drawbridge, draw down the blinds / everyone inside is getting high tonight, waiting for the plague to move on/ nobody’s getting sober till the liquor’s gone!

ASMW – 0N3S & Z3R0S

This week, I am talking about a band called “ones and zeroes”, or more exactly, 0N3S & Z3R0S. This three-peice is from Northern California, and has a unique sound, melding the sounds of electronica loops and effects with traditional instrumentation and alt-grunge vocals. After you sample “Mind Run Free”, Click on the “more by this artist” button and make sure to hit “Nothing Left” and “Rose” while you are checking out the 0N3S & Z3R0S.

ASMW – Red Guitar

This week, I wanted to draw some attention to a band called Red Guitar, a band from Kansas City with a folksy rock sound and songwriting combination that makes me think of Tom Petty. They have also been compared to The Fray, Ryan Adams, and Coldplay. Red Guitar is another one of those bands I have found on Amie Street where I purchase all their music, and *almost* feature them for a few weeks in a row, then wait in a vain attempt to choose a single song to highlight. Be sure to listen to “Angel Across The State Line” and “Jump Out On The Water”.
This track, “Let’s Go Out,” is about feeding wanderlust as both an activity for both searching your own soul and for exploring relationships with your travelling companions.
Today, the national average for a gallon of gasoline is at 3.50, and traveling is a headache. Spring is in full bloom, and schools are out in another month. It’s more difficult and expensive to get out and roam, but that spirit is as important as it ever was.

ASMW – Peter Salett

This week, I’m making a last minute entry because I’ve been listening to this album a couple of times over, trying to decide which song to highlight. Peter Salett has an acoustic sound and the stark, yet comfortable voice that brings the coffeehouse style to mind. The sound is akin to that of Shawn Mullins. This track, “Where We Lay” is about coming to a point in a relationship where everything is natural and unrushed. How appropriate for the first week of true spring weather, right?

ASMW – Matthew Ebel

I’m making a last minute entry this week with Matthew Ebel. This sing is a really funny take on office life, and is very fitting as signs of spring fever start to surface all over.

I also really like the “Wasting My Time” and “Latté Days And Porter Nights” tracks. Great use of piano here, but on several songs, the instrumentation seems to drown out Matthew’s voice.

ASMW – Dan Tharp

This week, everyone is either under the weather, getting away from work, or suffering though the adjustments that come with the time change and the continued cool weather. I’m currently cocooned in throw blankets with the dog snuggled beside me, and I’m having a hot cup of chai. So it seems a good time for an instrumental. Dan Tharp Has been playing the guitar as a hobby for almost thirty years, and says that he thought of playing professionally a lot, but has a horrible case of stage fright. I really like his style of playing. It is very comfortable, and melodic without skimping on the fine details that round out the pieces.
If you like his sound, you should tell him so that maybe he will start playing live shows.

ASMW – Great Divide

This week, I’m highlighting Great Divide, who are based in the Ann Arbor, MI area and who have a really groovy sound that takes a lot of influence from early rock and blues. The “Ain’t No Roads” track really reminds me a lot of The Band, and those long road trips to Florida.

ASMW – Mache Seibel

This week, I am highlighting Mache Seibel, who writes and plays health-related songs in the spirit of the old Schoolhouse Rock shows. they are educational, funny, and have good information. He has albums set up with songs geared toward different age groups, and an upcoming album about womens’ health. This song, Think STD’s is from the hilarious “Health Rock: Teen Edition” album, is obviously about STD awareness, and has a brilliant refrain that says “Think STD’s when your BVDs get down to your knees”. It goes very well withe the posts I did about The sex talk, MWTSS and self-awareness. Just the way I approach those “life” talks with the kids: truthful, honest, informative, and fun.
